Creating a Pleasant Environment For Your Workshop

Regardless of how you use your workshop and what kind of work you actually do in it, having a pleasant working environment will not only improve the standard of the work you will be able to achieve but also promote safer working.

I myself use my workshop for woodworking and this kind of activity requires a bit more control over the atmospheric conditions to keep the wood from moving or warping and ruining the work. Even if you are using your shop for less precise work you will still need to cover some basic things to make the shop a little more inviting.

Lighting. This is probably the most important element in creating a useable safe space. Natural light is of course the most preferred but usually is insufficient in quantity and obviously absent at night. Unfortunately most of us will have to install some kind of artificial lighting source.

Make sure there is plenty of overhead lighting mainly consisting of fluorescent strip lighting. This type is very cheap to run and creates a very useable general light in the shop. You can then supplement this with task lights using halogen bulbs to really highlight important areas.

Temperature. Most workspaces will need the ability to adjust the temperature/ humidity. This can create a much more pleasant working environment and will be essential in the depths of winter or height of summer. Obviously during summer you can use natural ventilation by opening all available doors and windows supplying fresh air into the shop. If this is insufficient then consider installing an air conditioning unit to reduce the temperature

Playhouse Plans - The Easy Way to Build a Playhouse

This summer it's going to happen. I've got plans to build a real playhouse in the backyard. Although my kids seem happy enough with the houses they make from cardboard boxes, I want something that will last through the summer, and hopefully next summer too. Plus, I know the kids would go nuts to get a real playhouse this year.

I've checked out the ready-made playhouses that the big toy companies sell, and boy do I really hate them. Aside from being pricey, they just look trashy. Last thing I want is a big piece of plastic sitting in the middle of the yard. Looking at some of the larger wood swing set kits, this is more along the lines of what I had in mind, but these are just too expensive to buy.

That leaves me to build a something myself. So now I'm looking at playhouse plans on the Web. I can't say I'm very happy with what I've found. Of course I've checked out all the free playhouse plans first, hoping to at least get an idea of what's involved with this kind of project. It's looking a little scary so far. Most plans seem to be written by carpenters, who toss around construction terminology as if I were right there beside them on a job site. So I'm off to do a little research in how playhouses are built so I can figure it out for myself. Keep in mind that I'm not looking to build one of those giant-sized playhouses - the ones that are so big you could rent them out as an apartment.

Making a Playhouse Safe

Let's talk safety first. Of course I don't want something that will fall over with the first gust of wind. Not that I let my kids play outside during a storm, but whatever I build has to be pretty darn solid for me to feel comfortable letting them play there without me. From the plans I've seen so far, looks like the weight of the materials alone will be heavy enough to keep the playhouse standing upright, without me having to mount it to anything. That's good news.

Getting Started - Make a Level Spot in the Yard

Most playhouse plans start with choosing a good spot in the yard. That makes sense. This step seems to help set the stage for everything else that follows, so it pays off to be careful and get this part of the project right first time out. Of course, to avoid building a crooked playhouse, I'll need to find a fairly level spot in the yard. This could be trickier than it seems. Even if I think a spot looks level, chances are it's not. I probably spend a good amount of time and energy just clearing and leveling a spot for the playhouse to sit.

Easy to build Playhouse Plans

Building the Playhouse Floor

After clearing and leveling a spot in the yard, most playhouse plans have me dive into building the floor. 2x6 treated lumber arranged in a grid-like pattern (joists) seems to be the favored choice of materials for this part of the construction, the same way it's used in building floors for real houses. I can build the floor right on top of the spot I cleared in the yard, but I'll probably put down a tarp first to keep the boards dry while I work on them. Building a floor that's square at each corner will take some careful measuring and maybe a carpenter's square to make sure everything is lined up. After that, it's a matter of simply attaching the 2x6s together with galvanized nails. I'll want a smooth surface on the playhouse floor for my kids to walk on, so that means laying down some plywood on the 2x6 floor joists. A couple 4x8 sheets of outdoor plywood should do the trick.

Building the Playhouse Walls

Building walls for a playhouse is pretty much the same method carpenters use to build a house. Using simple 2x4 studs, I'll lay the boards out on the ground and create each wall as a separate unit. Then with some help from a friend I'll raise the completed walls vertically and nail the corners together...just like people used to do when building barns.

Building the Playhouse Roof

While the playhouse floor and wall construction seems fairly straight forward, I think that the roof framing is going to be a little more complicated. Depending in which climate you live, a playhouse roof will get hit with rain, snow, and the sun, not to mention a few kids climbing on top of it, even though they were told not to. So I'm going to try my hand at a little construction carpentry and make a gabled roof. That's what most of the playhouse plans call for anyway, so I'll take on the challenge.

The good news about making a gabled roof is that you can buy some pretty inexpensive hardware that will essentially line up the roof rafters where you need them to go. Galvanized joist hangers will solve a lot of my problems here when it comes to hanging the rafters. There are plenty of instructions around for learning how to build a roof - for any kind of house, not just playhouses. So with the pre-made joist hangers and a few instructions, I think I'll be able to figure out this part of the project without too much trouble.

Decking and Sheathing

Next comes the most rewarding part of the project: adding plywood panels to the roof (decking) and the walls (sheathing). For roof decking, most playhouse plans call for 1/2" plywood panels that I'll simply nail down on to the rafters. Getting at the panels to nail them down might be a little tricky, though. Some people suggest you go at them from inside the playhouse - with a step ladder poking up between the rafters. Then, after each each panel goes down, I'll come down, move my ladder and go back up for the next section.

For the walls, a lot of playhouse plans call for 4' x 8' sheets of T-111 tongue-and-groove plywood, which should do a nice job of making the walls solid and weatherproof. I might also look into buying outdoor paneling with a decorative side - something to make the walls look more finished.

Finishing the Roof

I guess I haven't decided yet exactly what I'll put down on the roof decking. Most playhouse plans call for the same thing that's on the roof of my house: roofing felt and asphalt shingles. That seems like a lot of work to me right now, so I might shop around a little for some easier alternatives. Maybe a tin roof or some type of vinyl. I'll have to wait see about that.

Final Playhouse Touches

Well there's really no limit to what I can add for final touches - everything from window shutters to picket fences to really dress up the project. Most playhouse plans I've seen have plenty of extras to make a simple playhouse pretty extraordinary. I have a feeling once I get the basic construction finished, the extra touches might have to wait till next year.

After all the time and effort that I have a child building a picnic table, a friend said: "They know they will only grow out of it in a few years."

Needless to say that I have not talked to him for a while '. But as I talked to my wife, I said: "What would you have done is an adjustable table."

This idea did not come to me at all, before you start, if the chart. It, I lookedrealize my plans for woodworking plans adjustable picnic table. How was I wanted to see what kind of extra effort it would take.

It seems that there are two types of tables are adjustable. One way you can build a table like a regular table. My legs get a little 'harder to do, but fit so as to increase the table is higher than that of children. The banks remain the same size, but I could see how the plans fit the legs couldexceed those as well. The only thing that I have the benches as they were raised. For children, I prefer the benches attached.

The other type of adjustable picnic table is a flat, wrinkles. Has more in height, depending on where you rest your legs on the ground. What most reminds me of a giant TV tray. But I could see that it works well as a table or more would be if not a lot of space. And because it folds flat, it wouldbe easy for a picnic in the park or camping trips transport.

I decided that I could simply set up a folding picnic table. It would be useful in any case for a backyard birthday parties, and can be used in camping. I'll definitely be on my plans for this project, however. I do not want it revealed, as the table, what project my children first!

I have a victorian home with oak cabinets in the kitchen area. This phone not only looks great, it works well too. It has great reception. I can actually hear what people are saying on the other end of the line. There's room to put a pad and pencil for messages and also a small drawer, which I haven't used yet. Imagine having a drawer that is empty for a short span of time!!! The only thing I miss is caller id; however, I have another phone on the extension for that. Highly recommend the phone for visual ambiance. Solidly built.

Phone will not hang up - M. Kowalsky -
Similar to another reviewer earlier this year, my phone will not hang up. As soon as the phone is plugged in, a dial tone is present, which is of course good. However, placing the phone on the hook does not disconnect it from the line. Even if the phone is plugged in with the receiver on the hook, it still does not disconnect. Same behavior if the speaker phone is used. The end result of this is that no phone in the house will work as it causes the phone line to behave as if there was a phone off the hook (which there is not!). This started occurring after a few days of use. Unfortunately, I purchased the item in July, and did not install it until September (we were saving it for a new house we were moving into). Had I tried it right away, I would have likely discovered the problem and have been able to return it. I will not buy another one - very disappointed. As this is the second time this has happened to two separate people, buyers should be very cautious with this as it seems to be a recurring problem on multiple phones. I suppose Amazon could have re-sold the faulty phone from the earlier reviewer (May 2009) to me (in July 2009) - I would hope that was not the case, though.

We liked the looks of this phone for our kitchen. Installed the telephone, and in less than 3 months it doesn't work. The receiver arm where you hang up the telephone does not work. You do not get a dial tone when you lift up the receiver. Because this phone does not work, all of the other phones in the house, as well as our voice mail does not work. I finally had to uninstall it to make everything else work. Will not get a replacement.

Its a scented candle, and nothing more. It didn't do anything more to mask odors in my home than your average match. It has an artificial scent like most other "scented" candles. I found the scent made me nauseous after a short time burning.

Not good - Paul -
1) It doesn't do anything for the smell of smoke. I left it burning for two hours after I smoked one cigarette in the room and it still smelled when I came back.
2) The oils that are supposed to mix with the wax and eliminate the odor make me lightheaded and give me a headache.
3) For half the price of this I bought a candle in a jar that is four times bigger and has a much better scent. The bigger candle isn't made to cover cigarette odors, but the scent is powerful enough that it does (without being overwhelming). . . better than this candle.
In conclusion: another down the drain because I believed the positive reviews I read here instead of the more realistic negative reviews.

We purchased this table with free shipping from Amazon because we live in Alaska where almost no one will ship or if they do, we have to pay at least double for shipping. This table has a nice dark wood finish and looks great in our entryway. The instructions were not the best, but with a little common sense, were not that necessary. The assembly of the legs to the table top is a little frustrating & tedious because you have to hand tighten the screws with the included hex key and the location of the holes/screws is such that you have to insert and remove the hex key many times. The finished product is nice, though, and I would buy it again!

I paid a bit over 0 with shipping, and I find the quality to be really good and sturdy for the price. I didn't have any assembly issues, it took about five minutes to put together. It's perfect for a small space, especially because of the shape, and there were no flaws. And, it's all wood. The only thing I changed was the drawer pull, which needs to be done on most furniture anyway if you're particular about the look.

The package arrived on a rainy day and was placed outside our door with only a plastic bag covering the top of the product. By the time we got home later in the day the bottom of the packaging was soaked; it was ruined so making a return in the original packaging would have been impossible. As with the first table we received and returned the packaging was insufficient to prevent damage; this particular table had apparently been dropped; one corner is slightly damaged.

The table itself is full of flaws and doesn't fit together correctly. One leg is slightly tilted. While the table has a nice appearance from a distance once you get close it's easy to see all of the flaws and poor craftmanship.

We were very surprised with the quality - solid wood and very sturdy - and it looks expensive. It was not hard to put together, though you do need two people. A great buy!

This is a wonderful well crafted table and 2 chairs set. It has 5 farm animals painted on the table and one each on the chair seat. My kid (2 yrs old) loves the animals. The set is very easy to assemble. It is very sturdy and comfortable furniture and at the same time not too heavy to move. Its even comfortable for adults to sit on the chairs. My little one uses the table and chair practically for everything from drawing, to crafts, to having meals. While purchasing, I was hoping that they had different colors available as I am not too fond of green. But when I saw the set, I was happy with the colors used. Its uses neutral colors so it can be a good choice for any gender kid. When we got it delivered, the box was torn on one side but hopefully no damage was done to the contents of the box.

We bought this for our 2 year old a few weeks back. We were able to put this together in around 2 hours time , assembling was pretty straightforward. This set is very beautiful , pictures are hand painted and look amazing. This is quite sturdy and strong enough for adults. Many had said to have problems with the lights staying on and turning on. The only thing that I do agree with is when it comes to the lights being changed "if ever needed" we will need a professional electrician to do it...it cost a bundle just have some one come out and look at it. I am very disappointed in this purchase. I got it in Nov and after using it for 2 months, it started tripping the circuit breaker. I can no longer turn it on with an electrical problem. Amazon only takes Christmas returns for items purchased after Nov 1 and I purchased Oct 29. So now I'm stuck with an item I can't use. Save your money and buy something else.

I received this mirror a couple months ago. Initially, I noticed that the doors didn't close the whole way but it was not big deal. I use it everyday, but recently the one door won't stay open when angled towards the center, it just flops back to where it was. Maybe I'm being sentimental, but I miss the old wooden picnic table my grandparents had in their backyard. Most of the patio furniture I own now seems like a poor substitution for that wonderful old redwood table with the checkerboard cloth. I've got a few tools in my shop, so last week I went looking for some picnic table plans - hoping to build the same kind of picnic table I so fondly remember from my childhood.

Basic Picnic Table Construction
The picnic table plans I eventually decided to go with are for a trestle style table - something that looks a lot like what my grandparents had. It calls for fairly simple construction; a type of glue-and-screw joinery that uses simple butt joints and outdoor adhesive. Nothing too complicated there. And I can cut most of the wood with a cordless saw. After that, it's just a matter of getting all the pieces glued and screwed together with hardware.

Start with the Feet
Rather than using simple cross-hatched legs (like the cheap picnic tables), a trestle table has two separate leg sections located at each end of the table. Two long stretcher boards span between the two legs, keeping everything solid and square. I'll start the project by making a foot for each leg. After that I'll make the leg itself, which includes a strip of wood (rail) along the top to support the table itself.

Complete the Base
Up till now, I've been able to do most of the construction down in my basement shop. But before I attach the legs to the stretchers, I'll need to move everything out to the garage or patio. At this point, it's probably easier to complete the base assembly with the table flipped upside down. With a power drill in hand, my next step is to drill, glue, and drive woodscrews to connect the legs to the base.

Make the Top
For the top, my picnic table plans call for alternating 2x6's and 2x4's held together with 1x4 strips of wood called "cleats." Lay out all the boards on the floor, even up the edges, and then mount the cleats with woodscrews. I'll use a series of 1/4"-thick spacers and a couple of clamps to keep the boards steady while I mount the cleats.

Bring it All Together
With the assembled top still upside down, I'll lay the completed base on top and drill pilot holes through the stretchers and into the table top. Before flipping the table upright, I'll need to attach the two outer top rails for added strength. After applying some construction adhesive, I'll drive 4"-long screws through the outer rail and leg, into the inner rail. Now it's time to flip the table upright.
